What are tarot birth cards?
Birth cards connect the numbers in a birthday to the Major Arcana. The same birthday keeps the same result in a given method, giving you a pair of images you can return to as your circumstances change. You might notice a theme you recognize, disagree with an interpretation, or use the cards to ask a more specific question.
A birth-card pair differs from a pair drawn in a spread. There is no shuffle here: the calculation selects the cards. For a drawn pair, the question and card positions help shape the reading; for birth cards, you supply a situation from your own experience. Visit the tarot combinations guide to compare the two uses.
How this birth card calculator works
We use the grouped-date method described by Tarot School, with Tarot.com’s calculator explanation as a second reference. Here is the calculation, including the special cases.
- Add the month, day, first two year digits, and last two year digits. For February 5, 1962: 02 + 05 + 19 + 62 = 88. A year in the 2000s uses 20 plus the last two digits.
- For a two-digit total, add its digits: 88 becomes 16. For a three-digit total, keep the first two digits together and add the last: 144 becomes 14 + 4 = 18. Do not add all three digits separately.
- If that result is above 21, add its digits again until it is 21 or below. For December 29, 1999, the total is 159: 15 + 9 = 24, then 2 + 4 = 6. Tarot School does not spell out this edge case; this continuation follows Tarot.com’s overview.
- If the reduction encounters 19, keep all three cards: The Sun (19), The Wheel of Fortune (10), and The Magician (1). For March 15, 1990: 03 + 15 + 19 + 90 = 127; 12 + 7 = 19.
- For a result from 10 to 21, retain that card and add its digits for the second card. For example, 20 gives 2 and 21 gives 3. A single digit receives its implied partner by adding 9: 8 becomes 17/8, 3 becomes 12/3, and 1 becomes 10/1. A direct 3 uses The Hanged Man, as Tarot School specifies.
We display the higher-numbered card first. Tarot.com puts Strength before The Star in its single-digit example; our order follows Tarot School’s two-digit-first convention. The Fool does not enter this calculation, and 22 is reduced instead of being assigned to The Fool.

Personality Card and Soul Card
We use Personality Card for the higher-numbered card and Soul Card for the single-digit card. Personality gives a visible theme to examine in your actions and responses. Soul offers an underlying question about values or the practice you return to. These labels describe roles in a reading, without assigning you a fixed personality.
In 16/7, The Tower is the Personality Card and The Chariot the Soul Card: what assumption needs review, and what direction can you choose? In the 19/10/1 set, The Sun is the Personality Card, The Wheel of Fortune is the intermediate card, and The Magician is the Soul Card. There is room to consider all three themes together.
Birth card calculator FAQ
What is a tarot birth card?
It is a Major Arcana card selected through a birthday calculation. This method gives two cards, or three for the 19/10/1 exception. The result offers symbols to reflect on, without establishing facts about your personality or future.
Why does another calculator give a different answer?
Some calculators add every digit of the birthday separately, while this one adds the month, day, and two halves of the year first. Intermediate numbers matter. We follow Tarot School’s grouped method and its choice of 12 as the implied partner of a single 3.
Why do some people have three birth cards?
When the reduction encounters 19, keep The Sun, The Wheel of Fortune, and The Magician: 19 reduces to 10, then 1. The intermediate 10 remains part of that set.
Can The Fool be my birth card?
The Fool is not a birth card in this system. Tarot School uses positive numbers 1–21 and does not assign 22 to The Fool. A reduction above 21 continues down to a valid birth-card number.
Can birth cards predict my relationships or career?
No. Try using the cards to ask about choices, habits, or assumptions in a situation you already know. A birth-card result cannot tell you what another person thinks or what event will happen.
Can I save or share my result?
Yes. After calculating, use Copy link to share the same result. The birthday appears in the link as ?d=YYYY-MM-DD, so share it only when you are comfortable sharing that date. The calculation needs no account.
